When Viagra became available to patients, the question was simple: what should I do?
The answer was found in the recent medical news. Pfizer Inc. was fined $250,000 by the Food and Drug Administration, and the company agreed to settle civil lawsuits brought against it by several customers.
In a news release issued Thursday morning, the company said, "We have a new and exciting product in development. This product will be used by millions of men worldwide. It's the first oral treatment for erectile dysfunction that is designed to achieve and maintain an erection when sexually stimulated, allowing patients to achieve a firm erection by engaging in sexual foreplay and foreplay with their partner."
In fact, the FDA had already suspended the license of Viagra, in a settlement with Pfizer, until the company agreed to pay $5 billion to resolve the legal charges brought by customers.
However, the company said, "The company will continue to pursue any allegations that it failed to adequately disclose the potential side effects and interactions of the medication."
Pfizer said the settlement was "respectfully received," and will "be subject to continued review by the FDA" as the product's regulatory approval process unfolds.
Pfizer said it is "continuing to work with patients and healthcare professionals to ensure that this exciting product is the right fit for our patients."
Pfizer spokesman Steve Zook said: "We are pleased that the regulatory approval of Viagra will be completed, and we're confident that the company will continue to work closely with patients and healthcare professionals to ensure that this exciting product is the right fit for our patients."
Viagra and its generic equivalents, Cialis and Levitra, are available without a prescription.
Viagra, the brand name for the drug, is the first oral treatment to treat erectile dysfunction (ED).
Cialis, the brand name for the drug, is the second oral treatment to treat ED. The drug has also received a green light for safety reasons.
A spokesman for Pfizer, in a statement, said the company "has worked closely with partners and regulatory agencies to ensure that this innovative treatment is appropriate for patients and that we will continue to pursue any allegations that it failed to provide adequate information to patients."
A spokesman for the company said "we are pleased that the regulatory approval of Viagra will be completed, and we are confident that the company will continue to work closely with patients to ensure that this innovative treatment is the right fit for our patients."
However, Pfizer spokeswoman Kaitleen Thompson said the company "has not received any notifications from FDA related to this product" and that the company "continually works with patients and healthcare professionals to ensure that this exciting product is the right fit for our patients."
In a statement, a spokesperson for Bayer AG, in a, said the company "expects that the new drug will be approved in the next few weeks."
